Students on Ice: Learning about the Artic

While I was visiting the Vistek ProFusion Expo 2018 to update some of our gear at work, I managed to stumble upon a presentation on a program I had, never heard about, Students on Ice.

Unintiated as I was, I was completely entranced with the program and their mission, which provides hundreds of students with a high-quality, educational experience of the Artic, sustainability and the Indigenous peoples that live in these areas.

I watched the presentation by Nicolas Castel and Gary Tutte about their experience working with Sony cameras in the Artic (they were using Sony Fs5 and Fs7s, I believe) and providing footage of the entire experience, working with students and teaching them media skills.  They had strict deadlines around sending in footage and commuincations back to Ottawa and the media teams, it reminded me very much of helping manage the content team of the Canadian Invictus Games in 2017.

I was fascinated to hear how they managed various challenges regarding weather, equipment management, travel plans and respecting the environment and people involved while documenting an important and vulnerable part of the world.  I spoke briefly with Gary after the event, and I was extremely impressed by his passion for videography of this kind, and it opened my eyes to a whole new type of video professional that I didn’t know that existed. One of their final products was to produce a video that spoke to their trip experience, and it’s worth a watch:
